Making Research Easy & Effective @ M.O.M.S. with One-Search

Picture
Webpath is our library catalog's tool for simplifying Internet searches for information on websites.  With a single click of a tab, the same search used for identifying books can be used for finding appropriate websites.  Your website selections can then be filtered by your grade level, more specific subtopic, or Lexile score.  Why is this better than searching on Google?

Who makes it to the top of Google?

When searching Google, how many listings often come up on general searches?

Similar to most current search engines, at the top of Google's listings lie each of the following types of sites:
1. Sponsored Listings:  who can pay Google the most
2. Most popular or frequently viewed sites

* Do the richest or most popular ALWAYS have the right answers?  Should it be any different for websites?

One-Search organizes our library research databases, making it easier than ever to find research articles through our library media center's subscription information services online.  With just another tab on our library catalog, you can access information that last year required numerous links and passwords on each use.

Why are some databases better than others?

While very funny, this quote from TV's The Office is only partly true.  Anyone, anywhere can post anything to Wikipedia, which then gets submitted and later screened by the "editorial review board" for that particular page.  So key questions for discussion are:
  1. How does Wikipedia compare to a printed encyclopedia
  2. Who gets to join voluntary editorial boards?
  3. How do we find out who wrote the articles?

Why can't you cite a Wikipedia source?  Why is citing sources and not plagiarizing important?  Can teachers tell if your work is copied?  Any time you present information you must justify how and from where you found any information you provide.  Except common knowledge (example: broccoli is green), if it's not cited, it's assumed copied or false.

EasyBib is a great online and cell phone tool that makes it easy to prepare exact and proper citations.  With EasyBib, you can be sure that your works cited will impress and dazzle every time!  Click on the EasyBib button to the left to surf our library website's automated EasyBib tool and learn about the new cell phone app that makes citing even easier!
